I had the privilege of attending and presenting at the Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association (ICPA) state conference held at the Desert Cave hotel, Coober Pedy.

ICPA (Aust) is a voluntary, non-profit, apolitical parent body dedicated to ensuring that all rural and remote students have equity of access to a continuing and appropriate education. ICPA  has over 4,500 members, residing in the more remote parts of Australia.

I was warmly hosted by members of the ICPA committee and Oz Minerals provided my transport via Prominent Hill. Many thanks to Simon Clifton, HR Manager for Oz Minerals who very kindly met me at the Prominent Hill airport and drove me to Coober Pedy and back again at the end of the day

The day’s proceedings began with registration at 8:00 am followed by welcome addresses by the conference convenor, Bernadette Giles, the CEO of Coober Pedy Council, Mr Trevor McLeod, Helen Williams and the president of ICPA, Sharon Nutt.

Father Bourke declared the conference open and this was followed by the President’s report and then a series of Branch reports, and finally the Federal Council Report delivered by Federal President, Roxanne Morrissey.

My presentation after morning tea focused on the role of social media. You can access the presentation here:

Simon Clifton provided an interesting presentation on Oz Minerals and the opportunities for employment in the region. Here is a photo of Simon delivering his presentation to conference delegates.

Unfortunately, I had to leave the conference at lunchtime to return to Prominent Hill for the return flight to Adelaide, so I missed the afternoon presentations by Leanne Powell speaking about “RICE”, John Tonkin presenting about Telstra Country Wide, Anne Kibble, the Assistant Regional Director of DECS, Rowan Ramsey MP and the AGM. I also missed out on attending the conference dinner that evening, which I am sure would have been most entertaining.
